The Cybernetic Ensemble

Cy-Ens is a computer music project from MP|vH+ CSAP with the ambition of expanding the potentials of understanding the Aesthetics of computational sound and appreciation of logic, math and art.
With continous works like "Aryabhatia : Trigonometric Meditations", "Tai Yi Jin Hua Zong Zhi" and "The Tower of Hanoi", Cy-Ens explores logical art, to inspire learning and personal development, and to create art.
Cy-Ens uses free and open-source audio programming languages. Regarding the musical direction, Cy-Ens usually performs works based on an analogy. Music is viewed as a conceptual metaphor with various mathematical material as source domain and systematic sonic structure composition as the target domain. This is the process of generating or composing abstract, conceptual, mathematical and musical models of sound based on numbers and patterns of other conceptual domain. Patterns of musical form, musical structure and design arise from the logical relation of the target domain's components and their interdependence.

Cy-Ens performs music mainly using free and open source audio programming languages. (Sometimes beside the audio programming languages, digital gadgets such as Nintendo DS, iPad, etc., various types of MIDI controller such as sliders, knobs, percussion pads, and various software synthesizers, samplers and digital audio workstations may appear in the band's works.)



ARYABHATIA VOL II - 2015 | Compositions

Many of the Cy-Ens works are attempting to give up musical pitches in favour of using any possible number as frequencies in a sonic composition or improvisation but in order to follow a sort of logic, have some consistency, and also being a mind sport, these works use numbers related to the other conceptual domains (i.e.any systems which has an aggregate of numbers). The second volume of the "Trigonometric Meditations", like the first one, uses numbers related to the circle of angles. But instead of using values from units of angular measure (i.e. Degrees and Radians), this time Aryabhata's sine table is used. It is a set of twenty-four numbers given in the astronomical treatise Aryabhatiya, composed by the fifth century astronomer Aryabhata(476–550 CE), for the computation of the half-chords of certain set of arcs of a circle. Aryabhata's jya values become the pitch series and with a SuperCollider code like "SinOsc.ar([225,224.8560],0,0.1)*EnvGen.kr(Env.sine(3.45)) }.scope", the difference between Aryabhata's jya values and the modern jya values create a phase effect which lasts for the amount of time identical to the Angle (In Degrees and Arcminutes, treated as Seconds And Milliseconds time). So, for example the Si No 1 is a phasing of 224.8560 Hz and 225 Hz with a accompanying 225 Hz on Pd. There is an improvisational approach to the performance but the compositional path is pre-designed based solely on the numbers found in Aryabhata's Sine Table. The lines of code written in SC is not an integrated program, instead each line can be executed separately to generate any pitch for the number of desired times. this performance will be streamed on March 24 2015 from http://www.stazioneditopolo.it/24h-2015/index.html
